Mayor Celso Regencia’s supporters formed a picket outside Iligan City Jail to prevent the possible transfer of the Mayor to the Provincial Jail in Misamis Oriental. The group of Regencia received an order issued by the Judge of RTC Branch 44, Judge Marisa Estabaya to transfer the venue of temporary imprisonment pending the trial of the attempted ambush case filed by Congressman Varf Belmonte against the mayor. However, the camp of Regencia filed a motion for reconsideration that the mayor should not be transferred to the Provincial Jail. Another argument of the camp of the Mayor is the transfer could be illegal because of the election prohibition mandated the Omnibus Election Code of the Philippines.
The mayor was allegedly one of the accused who attempted to ambush the congressman last December of 2014. Accordingly, one of the suspects, Dominador Tamala, who were apprehended during the ambush pinpointed the Mayor as the brain of the said ambush. However, there was also another angle of the case which was not given any credit that it was probably related to Belmonte’s chairmanship to House Committee on Dangerous Drugs.
It is now already a week that the supporters of the mayor formed a picket and vigil outside the city jail especially that they received another information that the camp of Belmonte are now filing an exemption of the Election Banning prisoners to transfer 60 days before election and 30 days thereafter.
